Find Your Passion

As the song Flashdance says, “Take your passion and make it happen.” That is what you are looking for in your event – making what inspires you happen and bringing it to life for others. If you can do that, you are bound to succeed. First, however, you have to go through some initial steps to determine what you are most passionate about. That is not to say that you have to limit your inquiry to a single area. We are all multi-level beings with many interests. However, those areas you want to share in an event (and probably on a web site, in a book, on a DVD, etc.) need to be considered in relationship to the marketplace. If you are highly motivated about a subject, most likely there are many others with a similar interest. I recommend that you take the time to select a single area and work on that in your quest to establish your initial highly successful event.

That topic should be an area that you are extremely passionate about if not the thing that you are most passionate about. And you should research how many others have that same passion.

That research is much easier to do than it was when I entered this business thirty years ago. Today you can simply go on the Internet and search for any topic be it seminar production or Bucky Fuller. I use Bucky Fuller as an example because I am extremely passionate about sharing the insights and wisdom I have gained from working and studying with Bucky as well as writing a 500 page book about him (Buckminster Fuller’s Universe). Many years ago, I created and facilitated a two-day workshop about Bucky and his legacy. In doing that workshop project I came to realize that I could not easily connect with enough people in a geographic location who were passionate enough about Bucky to spend two days and a few hundred dollars to learn even more.

I did learn by trial and error some things that work and don’t work in the seminar business, and I share these throughout this website. One of my lessons is to make sure that your passion is shared by people willing to expend the time and money required to make your event successful. Perhaps you are so committed to what you are doing that money is not an issue. In that instance, just realize that people will often not highly value something given for free regardless of your best intentions.

Any topic of interest to you can, however, be dropped into the steps presented throughout this site. Be your passion Northern Italian Cooking or Radio Control Car Racing, you can turn it into a profitable event with supporting products, web site, etc. It’s really just a question of how far you want to take it and how much time, energy and resources (usually money) you want to invest in it. I also suggest that you consider if you want to have it as a hobby or create a new career for yourself. Or, perhaps, you are passionate about your current career and want to expand from working with people one-on-one to sharing and influencing larger and larger groups.

The potential is unlimited, and it is much easier to continue moving forward and following through when things appear difficult if you are highly motivated about your topic. That’s why I suggest that you take plenty of time during the creation of your event to make sure that this is the topic you really want to pursue and share with people big time. It’s much easier to change that topic during those first few days or weeks than it is to change months later when you have already created a web site, materials, the content and perhaps even booked rooms around the country. At that point, your passion for the topic can carry you through the rough spots that inevitably occur. However, if you are not truly passionate about the topic, you could find yourself bogged down in the mire of challenges without the drive to continue your forward progress.

So, be excited and give your ideas some time to gestate. In other words, let the ideas grow over time as is true with any of Nature’s creations. Plant the seed in your mind and on paper or computer and give it time to grow (or not). Sleep on it for days or weeks before making your final commitment. Allow your intuition to flourish while doing some basic research into your topic or topics. Invariably, one will rise to the surface, and you will know that to be where you want to invest your time, energy and money. Then, take that passion and make it happen.
